Following up a cryptic phone message from kerryveenstra , criollo  confirmed it: On KQED today  the WGBH show "Says You!"  did in fact use the word "occlupanid" as part of its "bluff round". It's one of those gentle trivia shows on npr where folks make up fake definitions to real words, and guests have to figure out which is a bluff, and which is the real deal.

Here's the part of show #1216 of "Says You" where they're asked to define a word very near and dear to my heart.

I mean, it couldn't be any more awesome. soundhive hunted down the track for me, (the whole show is found here) and i nearly did somersaults as contestants used their command of latin to figure out what the word meant. No matter that they instead went for the wrong answer, (and thoroughly chastened for it)  what's important is that the latin name i invented makes sense to a panel of wordsmiths. I'm elated. I'm horged. I'm agog that a word i made up for a humorous attempt at synthetic taxonomy is now slowly becoming the de facto term for "plastic bag closure", (as the kwik-lok corporation would have them be called.. *yawn* . ) Sorry folks, they're OCCLUPANIDS now and forever, so Says You!

I understand that horg.com has dedicated itself to your job search, but Google still lists your Holotypic Occlupanid Research Group page as the top search result for "occlupanid". Horg! (Of course!)

In fact, Mr. Horg, the first six out of six Google results are related to you!

(Don't you dare move that page!)

Says the Says You host, at the end of the round: "I always wondered what that was called."

Further congrats!

That show did open up the discussion at the Leckman household about proper pronunciation of occlupanid. In my head it is always oh-clue-puh-nid, but on Says You, they pronounced it aw-clue-pan-nid. Can you enlighten us?
Maybe post a sound file with the proper pronunciation for the benefit of BBC and NPR correspondents :)

well, see that's a poser. i personally pronounce it "aw-clue-pan-id". so it was gratifying to hear Says You corroborate my made-up latin. However, you don't awclud something, you oh-clude it. So we may both be wrong! I may have to defer to matokie on this one.

I'm always a bit hesitant to announce my correctness in these matters, as most of my latin was learned alone while reading, instead of speaking it with other word-nerds (of which there were none in my school to converse with).
